Taught by Back Channel Staff
Saturday, October 26th, 9 AM to 5:30 PM (Lunch provided)
Note: Students are invited to bring any tools they may already own, but we would discourage you from going out and buying tools for the class.
Sharpening is a gateway skill, intimidating to beginners, which can be easily confused by the many helpful, but often contradictory videos and articles available to the beginner. Skills are best learned by hands-on application of new knowledge under the guidance of an instructor. In this class you will learn simple and reusable methods for sharpening chisels, plane irons, card scrapers, and spokeshave blades. If you have struggled with hand tools, this is the place to start.
Key lessons include:
- Sharpening equipment
- Correct angles and bevels
- Grinding
- Honing
- Polishing
- Plane blade cambers
- Free-hand honing
- Care and maintenance
